Description
A Prize Find! Take a look at the entire image! Very very early 35mm slide image of SAS's first DC-8 jet taken May 11, 1960 at Idlewild IDL, New York (of course IDL airport is now known as JFK) after a transatlantic flight from Copenhagen CPH, Denmark.Image shows passengers leaving the DC-8 via stairway truck. Image shows jet has slogan "First Over The Pole Around The World" painted on it just to the right of the jet's door. Image also shows 'Dan Viking' on the nose of the aircraft - just as it was originally delivered to SAS just over 1 month prior on March 31, 1960 and just 10 days after its inaugural transatlantic flight on May 1, 1960 to New York. At the left near the bottom it looks like a 1958 Chevy Station wagon next to the plane. This photo was taken May 11, 1960 at IDL Idlewild, New York by the photographer who was a passenger on the flight from Copenhagen, Denmark. (IDL Airport re-named JFK in 1963) The slide is in excellent condition and the image is crisp but needs to be lightened to really see some of the detail.
One side has original hand written description "SAS DC-8 Jet Arriving In US Idelwild International Airport New York" that was written in 1960 by the amateur
photographer (R. Roosa who was a passenger on the flight); slide also has embossed develop date "May 60" and slide # "21" and "Made In U.S.A".
Other side features Kodachrome Transparency Processed By Kodak.
Slide was acquired recently at the photographer's estate sale and has never been published. This slide hasn't been seen in more than 50 years when it was placed in the slide carousel in 1960 (the same carousel that I removed the slide from today. Slide has great resolution - see close ups taken of the slide.
