Description
Wonderful antique ashtray adorned with the figure of Pierrot, the sad and hapless clown of 17th Century European stage comedies. Pierrot is wearing his customary suit of baggy trousers, loose-fitting blouse with oversized buttons and ruffled collar, holding his lute with one hand and scratching his head in bewilderment with the other.Clearly an ashtray, but doubles as a tray for desk or dresser top, for coins, stamps, earrings. Or simply a charming and unusual decorative piece for your living room or mantel.
Bronze clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class.
One of those companies was Armor Bronze, an original label still affixed to the bottom. Circa 1920's (when the company had changed its name from National Metalizing to Armor Bronze).
Condition is excellent. No damage to the cladding; nothing dented or scratched; nothing broken off or glued back on. No cracks where feet meet base. Paint all is original and almost entirely intact. Even the inside of the bowl is in good shape. Glass insert is original - it fits perfectly, and other inserts I have for Armor Bronze pieces are either this same amber color or a ruby red.
6 1/2 inches tall; 5 1/2 inches wide (from the end of one cigarette rest to the end of the other); 5 1/2 inches front to back.
