Description
Interesting bookends in the form of stylized oak leaves on a base encircled by a garland of olive branches.Bronze-clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household items that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class.
One of those companies was Marion Bronze of Metuchen, NJ, established in 1923 and operating into mid-century. These pieces probably are from that latter period. Marion's initials MB are formed into the backs. Also, this design appears in a reprint of a Marion Bronze catalogue, with the name "Oak Leaf."
Condition is good. No breaks in the cladding, no dents or mashed corners, minimal dings and nicks. Finish is a gold color but has suffered deterioration along edges and interiors, which shows as a rust-reddish color. PLEASE KNOW the camera flash makes that discoloration appear MUCH more severe than in natural light.
Both pieces sit flat and stable.
These are substantial: 6 inches tall; base is 5 1/4 inches X 3 inches. Heavy at 3 1/2 pounds EACH. These babies will hold up those over-sized gardening books.
Perfect gift for the arborist or squirrel keeper in your family.
