Description
This may be the best condition set of these I've seen. Michelangelo's figures of "Day" and "Night" from his 16th Century tomb of Giuliano De Medici in Florence. The human figures are plated in 24K gold.Bronze-clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class. You can feel the indentations in the bottoms, and the wire loops used for suspending the pieces in a vat of electro-plating solution.
No maker's mark but the prior owner told me these are the work of Daison Metalliques and I believe that is so. I know nothing about the company other than their foil label (missing here) says, "24 Karat Gold Plated." I don't know how you tell if it is, indeed, gold plating. But that is what their labels say.
Condition is excellent. Both pieces sit flat and stable.
These are substantial: 6 1/2 inches tall; base is 6 1/2 inches X 3 3/8 inches. The pair weighs just over 7 pounds.
Perfect gift for the lover of classical allegory in your family.
