Description

Wonderful table-top bust of Dante Alighieri, the medieval Italian poet, author of "The Divine Comedy."
Bronze-clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating.  A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class.
One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze, operating in NYC in the 1920's to early '30s.  Their name is formed into the back edge of the base, as is their stock number 336 which, according to my original Pompeian catalogue, is "Dante Bust" in the Art Objects category.  Circa 1922.
Condition is great.  No breaks in the cladding, nothing dented or mashed.  All those hollows and folds seen in the 2 pics of his headwear are just the natural gathering of the cloth, and do not represent damage.  Paint is original, the white of his shirt entirely gone, but most of the blue remains in his outer garment.  The piece sits flat and stable.
This is big:  9 inches tall; 11 1/2 inches shoulder to shoulder; 5 1/2 inches front to back.  Heavy at 9 1/2 pounds.
Perfect gift for the epic limerick writer in your family.
